Description

I have seen images of this place before, so I had to stake out its location and get a shot. I made a rash decision to leave the tripod in the car for the hike here, which on my part was a huge mistake. It was still early in the morning, but just late enough to get harsh light, hence why this is in black and white. It is one of the more interesting places I have been and a fun hike. It's hard to imagine that the people that once lived in this area and utilized this site had to climb up and down a few hundred feet of stone in order to retrieve water and other necessities. Once we found the main site I was amazed at how large the alcove was. I had heard so much of the site being very small, but I could stand straight up comfortably in the alcove. The rock is extremely soft and fragile. Peering out through the little arch into the canyon really felt like you were away from everything and put you back in time. There were times hiking on the edge where you feel you could easily fall off the cliff only to never be seen again. It was quiet and peaceful as we were the only ones on the hike and in the parking lot until we headed out where a group of older folk were debating the hike just before the steep climb. This is a place I know I will return to on my next trip out to canyonlands, it's just special.
